|What is Your Purpose?
Without a clearly defined purpose, success is limited to your own efforts. When you move in the divine purpose
God created for you, success is expansive, true and limitless.
Your purpose is contained in your closeness to God. Old wounds, unresolved issues, physical and emotional
suffering, all keep you separated from God so you can’t live God’s call on your life.
Sovereignty and purpose are one and the same. Sovereignty means absolute authority over a thing. God has
given you absolute authority over your life, because you can choose life or death. Life is with God. Death is without
Him. You get to choose. This choice is your first step in finding your purpose.
First things first
The first step to finding your purpose is to be in relationship with God. The Bible says the only way to meet God is
through Jesus. Some will disagree and say that there are many different ways to God, but the Bible is very clear
about it. There is only one way to God.
Before you read the scripture passage below, you need to know that it is a parable. That means the meaning is
hidden from people who refuse to hear the truth. If your heart and mind are open to the truth, you will be able to
understand this passage without me explaining it. But since my purpose is to teach about Jesus so that you can
come to know God, so you can find your God-given purpose, an explanation is necessary to thoroughly understand
When you’re reading the passage, remember the “Shepherd” is Jesus and the “Sheep” are those who come
through Jesus to meet God. The first scripture is the directly from the Bible (word for word). The second passage is
an explanation of the scripture so you can understand why you must accept Jesus before you can come to know
God. And by extension, you must know God to know your God-given purpose.
From the Bible
Even if you’ve been a Christian a long time, please read the entire passage. Read it slowly and think about what it
says. This is the best way to read the Bible – slowly and thoughtfully. When we think about what it is trying to say,
God oftentimes will reveal the truth in the words for us.
The Good Shepherd and His Sheep (John 10:1-12 NLT)
“I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must
surely be a thief and a robber! But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The
gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by
name and leads them out. After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him
because they know his voice. They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”
Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant, so he explained it to them: “I tell you
the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not
listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and
will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he sees a
wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the
wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.
Now the explanation, to help you understand what the passage is saying, so you get the important nuggets of truth
from it. As before, please read it slowly and think about what it is being said. Feel free to re-read the scripture
above to see how they parallel each other.
Jesus and You
Right away Jesus says he is telling you the truth. He isn’t lying. He’s telling “the” truth, not “a” truth. A truth would
mean truth is relative, or that it changes, or can be taken in many different ways (paths). He is telling you what he is
telling you next is “the” one and only truth. There is no other truth regarding this issue.
The issue is how do you get to God.
Jesus says, “Pay attention because what I’m telling you is very important to understand. There are not many ways
to God. Anyone who tells you that is a liar. They may believe that because they’ve been lied to too, but there is not
many ways to God. It is the biggest lie ever told by Satan, the enemy.”
Jesus continues by saying, “If someone tells you that you can get into the glorious palace of God by using any door
expect the front door, they are lying to you. There is no other door to God’s palace.” Jesus stands at that door.
Jesus decides who can legitimately enter God’s palace, and who can’t. Anyone who tells you that there is any other
way to get into God’s palace is a thief and a liar.
The reason the liar wants you to believe there are other ways to God is to destroy you. Because by trying to scam
your way into God’s palace, you to become an enemy of God. God’s enemies will be punished for their deceit.
Some will tell you God is an angry God, who you can’t please, so why keep trying to. This is another lie, because
God will welcome you into the palace. There’s no need to crash the party. All you have to do to enter into God’s
presence is recognize Jesus (God’s Son). Once you know Jesus, he will invite you into God’s palace. And you can
use the front door like the honored guest you are.
Please read this part again…
“Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant, so he explained it to them: “I tell you
the truth, I am the [door] for the [people]. All who came [prior to] me [telling you how to get to God] were thieves and
robbers [liars]. But the true sheep [people who believed the truth] did not listen to them. Yes, I am the [door]. Those
who come in through me will be saved [from Hell]. They will come and go freely and will find good [lives]. The thief’s
[Satan and others who lie about different ways to God] purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to
give them a rich and satisfying life.”
Do you see how the word “purpose” is used twice in that scripture passage?
The purpose of anyone telling you there is more than one way to God is to steal and kill and destroy your purpose.
They steal it by convincing you to do something else. They kill it by convincing you that you it will never happen, so
that you will give up on your dream. And ultimately, they destroy it by convincing you that God is an angry God who
won’t help you live your purpose.
Jesus’ purpose is to save you from destruction. He gives you a rich and satisfying life. The first step to your
purpose is to decide you want Jesus’ to activate his purpose in your life.
Did you notice that Jesus said, “Yes, I am the gate [door]?” He is “the” gate, not “a” gate. That means he is “the”
one and only door. Jesus is telling you that there is no other way to God except through him. Jesus is the only way
to your purpose, which rests in the palace of God.
To meet Jesus, please pray this prayer out loud and believe that you are speaking to Jesus (because you are):
Jesus, I’ve believed the lies of the world. I didn’t know that you were the only way to God. I know now, and I don’t
want to live separated from you or God one more minute. I’m asking that you forgive me of the things I’ve done that
displease you. Wash my sins away and make me clean so that I can stand before God, wholly and completely
acceptable. Jesus, I want you to be in charge of my life. Amen.
